Chanel's "Little Black Jacket". There's a book about it. There's a film about it. There's been an exhibit featuring it, where more celebrities than could be named were in attendance. It's iconic, enduring, it's the definition of a classic. Effortlessly chic and simply stunning.
First designed by Coco Chanel in 1954, she wanted her "little jacket" to not only be pleasing to the eye, but also to be comfortable and functional. Coco Chanel wanted to free women from the confining silhouettes of the 1950's. She infused simplicity, elegance, and clean lines into her design. It has remained a staple in women's fashion ever since. It is absolutely timeless.
From Jackie Kennedy to Princess Diana, Anna Wintour, to Lady Gaga. Celebrities, royals, fashion icons, the career woman, and everyone in between, have worn and loved Chanel's little jacket.
I have dreamed of owning such a jacket for as long as I can remember. However, spending hundreds (pre-loved) to thousands (straight from the boutique), on a single jacket, no matter how beautiful, just isn't feasible right now.
Chanel, specifically, the little jacket has been replicated many times over, by endless brands and designers. All the designs I have come across over the years, have always left something to be desired. Either the quality was sub par, the fit wasn't right, or the price was still way too much. I am quite busty, and I have curves for days, so not all high end fashion works for me. Even trying to find a Chanel jacket pre-loved wasn't working due to my curves. Chanel exists in a size that would accommodate my bust and curves, but the pieces are rare and very expensive. The world is changing though, fashion is changing, making way for, and even embracing, curves.
I however, do not have to wait any longer to adorn the look I so love, the little black jacket. I cannot possibly describe my elation when I saw this little black "Lady Jacket" by J Crew. It is still quite pricey, but luckily I made the nice list and Santa brought me an early Christmas gift! It's a gift that will keep on giving for sure, and I will cherish it for years to come.
This jacket is a perfect stand in for the Chanel. From the four pocket design, the beautiful, luxurious feeling fabric, to the braided, fringy trim, and beautiful gold buttons, it is exceptional and I am in love. Best of all, it fits my curvy shape. I can even button it completely (major bonus) over my bust. My mind is spinning with all the beautiful ways I can style this jacket, my very own, little black jacket! Finally!
For today, I kept it very simple. I wanted this jacket to speak, appropriate as J Crew's slogan is, "Do you Speak J Crew?" I let the jacket do the talking in this outfit. I think it would look even better with a simple white t-shirt underneath, but it is beyond chilly and it's winter here in my neck of the woods, so I went with all black. Honestly though, this jacket will literally go with anything, and I know I will have it for the rest of my life!
