Classically Bold: How to Style Statement Jewelry

Hey ladies!

Statement jewelry is everywhere you look these days. You can find statement jewels anywhere from high end shops and boutiques, to your every day department store. Before we jump into the piece I am featuring today, lets talk for a minute about where statement jewelry originated and how exactly to wear it, specifically the statement necklace.

You know me and how I love a little history, so lets talk about where the trend originated! Lets go back to ancient Egypt, where some of the earliest pieces of statement jewelry were found. Big collar necklaces and long chandelier earrings were popular with this long ago civilization. These types of pieces obviously belonged to royalty. Coco Chanel is largely responsible for bringing this trend into the modern world. She created elaborate pieces, mixing the real deal with imitation jewels (think glass and crystal) in the 1920's. Of course in those days, it was commonly referred to as "costume jewelry". We could talk about this all day long. I find the history of fashion, well, fascinating. But lets move on to how to style statement jewelry.

I have always been in the "less is more" camp. If you're like me in that, don't be afraid of statement jewels. You can keep it classic and simple while still making a statement. You want your statement piece to stand out. It's usually best to stick to one statement piece per look. However, you can mix pieces. You just have to do it the right way. You wouldn't want to wear statement earrings with a statement necklace for example, that would be too much going on in one area, and would detract from your overall look. You could wear a statement bracelet with a statement necklace, or a statement ring with statement earrings and so on. You just don't want the pieces too close together or it gets too crowded and draws the eye in many different directions. If you're making a statement with your necklace, than let the necklace do the talking, you don't want to wear a ton of sparkle elsewhere (think sequins and embellishments). Statement necklaces typically look best against one color, as opposed to patterns. Think about your neckline as well. A collar with a lot of detail or a halter top for instance, would clash with your necklace. I personally love the look of a statement necklace against a black turtle neck, so classic and elegant. The key takeaway from all this is to let your statement piece stand out; it should be the focal point of your look.

I have several statement pieces that I really love. I'd been looking to expand my collection when I was approached by New York City based Mirina Collections about becoming a brand ambassador and one of their "Mirina Girls". After some research of the brand, I was impressed to see they were featured at New York Fashion Week 2016! Each piece is handcrafted, and I can officially attest to their beauty. Wearing this necklace truly makes me feel like royalty!

I chose a piece from their Famous Collection, the "Leona" necklace, and I am just in love with it. Keep scrolling to see how I styled this necklace and a few others.

The Leona Necklace by Mirina Collecions

As you can see this necklace just shines (quite literally) with a simple black top!

Or white! I wore it here under a collared shirt, this would be perfect in an office or professional setting.

The bling plays a classy game of peek a boo under a classic collared button up.

This might be my favorite way to style it, because it's unexpected. This necklace looks fab against a classy t-shirt with a blazer!

The round neckline of the t-shirt and blazer accommodate the shape of this particular piece.

Or skip the blazer all together and go for a bold but casual look. I like to keep things elegant and classy, even if I'm just sporting a t-shirt. Check out these awesome t-shirts from one of my favorite Etsy shops below!

With a turtle neck sweater and simple updo. So classic.

Several other pieces I own and love, and how I have styled them.

I purchased this necklace from Zara after the Duchess of Cambridge wore it to an event. It is gorgeous and I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have snatched one up before they sold out everywhere.

I wore this beauty for a fancy date night with my handsome husband this past Valentines day.

Again the rounded neckline and simplicity of this dress becomes the shape and boldness of the necklace.

Another of my favorites is this piece from J Crew Factory. I love this one around the holidays because it reminds me of snowflakes!

As you can see, statement necklaces can be so versatile and are so wearable, when done properly. I hope I've given you a few ideas about how to incorporate one into your wardrobe, or if you shy away from bling and excess, like I once did, you now see that it can work for your style too!

That's all for now lovelies!
Love,
Kate
